A free creative day that brought young people together

Creative Media Social, Barnstaple Library, 10 January 2026

On a Saturday afternoon in January, sixteen young people from across North Devon came along to Barnstaple Library for a free Creative Media Social. Most were aged between 10 and 15, travelling in from Barnstaple, South Molton, Braunton, Bideford and further afield.

There was no pressure to make anything in particular. Professional kit was set out across animation, video, photography, podcasting, music and social media, and young people moved between activities at their own pace, with a quiet area for anyone who wanted a breather. Half of those who came told us they were neurodivergent, and a good number had asked for anxiety or sensory support beforehand, so a calm, low-pressure space mattered a great deal.

And they stayed.

The room was busy from early on and held steady right through the afternoon. Afterwards, young people told us they had learned new skills and made friends, and half said they would welcome more days like this, alongside more focused skill sessions to follow.

The Creative Media Social was made possible by the Devon Places To Go Things To Do Youth Fund, awarded through Devon County Council and selected by Devon Youth Council, with match funding from the Ace Holds The Space Group. Engaging Young People!

Audioart and Podcasting Workshops started with Libraries Unlimited!

Since November 2024, we have been managing Audio Art and Podcasting workshops in partnership with Ace Holds The Space at Bideford Library, organised by Libraries Unlimited. We aim to expand this exciting initiative for youth engagement. The workshops are lively, tech-focused, engaging, and enjoyable. Participants are creating portfolios that can lead to careers in media, the creative industry, radio, and journalism. Each block of workshops last four weeks and cover:

1. Audio Art and Introduction to Podcasting

2. Podcast/Radio Show Broadcasting and Jingle Making

3. Digital Visual Creation for Media

4. Field Experience - attending and recording at an event

All required equipment and technology is available for participants. The workshops are led by Roshani Ramass, a radio and media producer from Ace Holds The Space, alongside another facilitator. Funding granted!

We are pleased to inform everyone that we were recently granted £700 in match-funding toward our costs for three Gatherings in North Devon by Flourishing Culture and North Devon Council so a big big thankyou!!
